Francisca Rocha Gonçalves presents an immersive sound installation in Centro de Arte Moderna Gulbenkian's Sound Room, inspired by the underwater acoustic environment of the Tagus River. Francisca Gonçalves (Porto, 1978) is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher working with sound, science, and environmental activism, combining technology, ecology, and art to connect people with nature.
‘Interferences in the Tagus’ (2024-25) is an immersive installation developed during a research residency, featuring underwater recordings collected by the ‘FISHBIOACOUSTICS Lab’. The installation recreates the underwater soundscape including its biological, geological, and anthropogenic components, revealing natural rhythms alongside human disruptions.
The installation highlights interactions like the Lusitanian toadfish and the meagre, contrasted with noise pollution from boat traffic. The artist emphasizes the importance of sound for aquatic species and the impact of human noise, questioning why sound pollution is often overlooked in environmental debates.
Please note that the installation includes loud noises.
